Avalanche fall 2-1 in overtime to Oilers

The Colorado Avalanche fell 2-1 in overtime to the Edmonton Oilers in a heartbreaker Tuesday night at Ball Arena.

The Game

Ben Meyers was credited with the first goal of the game after the Oilers defense swatted the puck past their own netminder at 4:52.

14 seconds later, the Oilers took the puck the other way and Mattias Ekholm fired a shot past Alexandar Georgiev. At the end of the first, the score was tied 1-1.

The Avalanche played terrific defensive hockey in this game and were able to hold superstar Connor McDavid to just one assist, but their offense wasn't able to get anything by Stuart Skinner.

In the extra period, Even Bouchard converted on a 4-on-3 power play to give the Oilers the win.

Takeaways

Any Mix it up better. The Avalanche were playing too long pinned down in their own zone and it bit them in the end. Understandably, it's difficult because the Avs are dealing with a lot of injuries and they're missing Cale Makar, but you have to get your offense moving as well.

Nonetheless, the Avs head into their final regular season game Thursday night against the Winnipeg Jets with a chance of winning the Central Division once again (6 p.m. MT). With the Minnesota Wild losing to the aforementioned Jets, the Avalanche will place no worst than second in the division. And with the Dallas Stars just a point behind, what better way to head into the playoffs than with another division title.
