Avs win 6-4 to ruin Kraken's home playoff debut, take 2-1 series lead

SEATTLE — Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen scored in the third period and the Colorado Avalanche ruined Seattle Kraken’s first home playoff game with a 6-4 victory Saturday night in Game 3 of the first-round series. MacKinnon scored his first two goals of the playoffs, Cale Makar added his first of this postseason after winning the Conn Smythe Trophy during last year’s championship run, and Rantanen scored for the second straight game, ending the game with an empty-net goal with 2:14 left. MacKinnon found the net late in the first period to give Colorado a 2-1 lead. His second goal was even slicker, as he took the puck up ice and ripped a wrist shot past Seattle goalie Philipp Grubauer for a 5-3 lead. That goal came just moments after Rantanen silenced the Seattle crowd with a goal of his own. J.T. Compher added a  short-handed marker in the first period and Makar’s goal at 4:33 of the second period put the Avalanche up 3-1 lead. Makar’s goal came off a clean faceoff win.

SEATTLE – Jordan Eberle scored on the power play 3 minutes into overtime and the Seattle Kraken beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Monday night to even their best-of-7 series at 2-2. Eberle collected a deflection and buried his first goal of the playoffs past Colorado goalie Alexandar Georgiev. Seattle was on the power play after Josh Manson was called for tripping on Jaden Schwartz on a breakaway attempt in the opening moments of the extra session. It was the first playoff overtime game in franchisee history for the Kraken, who ensured there would be at least one more game played in Seattle. Will Borgen and Daniel Sprong scored in the first period to a 2-0 lead. Mikko Rantanen scored twice in the second period for Colorado to pull even. Game 5 is Wednesday night in Denver. Seattle dominated play in the offensive zone most of the night, outshooting Colorado 43-22. But after taking a 2-0 lead, the Kraken were unable to extend their advantage thanks largely to Georgiev. Sources: Valeri Nichushkin involved in alcohol-related incident at team hotel

Image
According to sources reporting exclusively to The Avalanche Sin Bin, Valeri Nichushkin was involved in an alcohol-related incident at the team hotel, which led to the Avalanche getting involved. If Nichushkin is gone long-term, that will mean the entire second line from the Stanley Cup-winning squad a year ago, is gone, including Gabriel Landeskog, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The Avs and the Seattle Kraken have split the first two games in their first round series. As of Monday evening, there is no further information available on whether Nichushkin has entered the Players Assistance Program or if he has been formally disciplined by the Avalanche. The 28-year-old Nichushkin has seven years remaining on his contract, so the Avalanche need to find a way to handle this situation and fast

DALLAS — Ryan Hartman gave the Minnesota Wild a 3-2 win in their playoff opener — a game that began Monday night and dragged into early Tuesday morning. Hartman scooped up the puck and fired a wrister over the extended leg of Jake Oettinger to give the Wild a 1-0 series lead in their Western Conference Quarterfinal matchup. “Their goalie was fantastic, our goalie was fantastic,” Minnesota coach Dean Evason said. “Some of the saves that both of them made were, it feels like nobody is going to score, right?” Oettinger didn't keep his head down after the bitter loss and says he's ready for Game 2. “Just a bounce that went their way,” Oettinger said. “We had a couple that didn’t go our way and that’s hockey. ... Tight game and two good teams, and it’s going to be a heck of a series.” The second game of the series is Wednesday night in Dallas. The Stars had just failed to capitalize on a power play after Jamie Benn was tripped up by Frederick Gaudreau 9:11 into the second overtime.

EDMONTON --  Alex Iafallo  found the net  at 9:19 of overtime, and the Los Angeles Kings rallied for a 4-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinal at Rogers Place on Monday night.  Iafallo capitalized on a power play with a one-timer after a feed from Viktor Arvidsson.  "I was just trying to get lost; we have a lot of good players that can make good passes," Iafallo said. "I was just in the middle there and trying to find a good spot. [Anze Kopitar] had it on the wall and got it down to 'Arvi' and I was just trying to get in a good spot past the defenseman and he was able to make that pass to me, and I just hammered it home." The power play was stellar for the Kings throughout the game. Kopitar made it a 3-3 game with 17 seconds left in regulation. With Joonas Korpisalo pulled for an extra attacker, Kopitar pounced on a rebound after Stuart Skinner left the puck open after stopping a shot from Phillip Danault. Kopit

Bruins defeat Panthers 3-1 for Game 1 victory

BOSTON, MA — One down, 15 to go.  The Boston Bruins took care of business in game one of the Eastern Conference Playoffs with a 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers at TD Garden.  David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand and Jake DeBrusk all scored for the Bruins Linus Ullmark finished with 31 saves on 32 shots for the dub. Boston won the game despite playing without their captain Patrice Bergeron who sat out with a stomach ailment that has been running through the Bruins locker room.  Pastrnak got things started with a power play goal in the first on a slick feed from Tyler Bertuzzi. The Bruins could have easily led by 3 or 4 goals if not for the work by Panthers goalie Alex Lyon who stopped Dmitry Orlov, Tyler Bertuzzi and Trent Frederic on point blank chance all in the first.  Brad Marchand pushed it to a two-goal cushion 3:41 into the second on a wrister that broke through Lyon’s glove. The Panthers fought back with a goal from Matthew Tkachuk off a turnover off the skate of Dmitry Orlov.  The B

Landeskog done for season, Avs defeat Jets 4-2

The reigning Stanley Cup Champions will continue their season-long uphill battle in their quest to claim another championship. The Colorado Avalanche announced Thursday that captain Gabriel Landeskog will miss the entire season due to a lingering knee injury. Landeskog netted 11 goals and added 11 assists in his 20 playoff games, including an assist in the Game 6 clincher. The captain had been skating in preparation for a return from his offseason surgery, but Landeskog chose to shut himself down with just one regular season game remaining on the schedule. The Avalanche have dealt with injuries all season, but the last few weeks have beeb relatively difficult. Last year's Conn Smythe and James Norris Trophy recipient Cale Makar have been hit with injuries in recent weeks: superstar Cale Makar has missed the last five games with a lower-body injury, and his return is day-to-day. However, Darren Helm, who has been hurt for a majority of the season, like Landeskog, could be out the re
